I’m always asked how I get my curls to be soft and bouncy. In this video, I’ll be demonstrating the process I go through. This may take up to an hour, depending how long your hair is or how long you keep your hair wrapped around the curling iron. Although, curling your hair in general takes some time.

Before I started recording I had already sprayed heat protection spray on my hair and blow dried it. I use Tresemme Thermal Creations Heat Tamer Spray [I have a picture of the bottle in my 'Daily Hair Routine' blog]. I didn’t straighten it this time because it’s harder to curl hair after it’s been straighten than to curl your hair when it’s in a more natural state. If you have extremely wavy or curly hair, what you could do is take a brush and put your blow dryer against the bristles as your comb through your hair. Here’s an example of someone straightening their hair with a round brush. This technique will work for any hair type.

After my hair is straight or ‘relaxed’, I put frizz control cream into my hair. I use Granier Fructis Soft Curl Cream [A picture of it's below this section]. Afterwards, I clip my hair up into three sections: a top section, a middle section, and a bottom section. The clips I use are called duckbill clips [Picture in 'How to Straighten Hair - The Proper Way' blog]. Once my hair is out of the way I take a one inch strand of hair and curl it *inwards. I choose to alternate the way I curl each strand of hair. I’ll curl the ones that are closest to my face inward and the ones following *outward and then in an outwards, inward pattern.
The curling iron I use is the Conair Instant Heat 1 1/2 inch Curling Iron. The setting goes up to 25 and I like to keep it there because my hair is hard to curl. I hold each strand for about ten to fifteen seconds. When the strands are cool to the touch I slightly run my fingers through them. I do it so the curls are not so spiral-like. I like my curls more wavy, but you can leave them in spiral curls if you’d like. If you touch your curls while they’re hot you’ll just lose the curl completely. It’ll fall and it won’t be as together as it would if it was cooler.

*Imagine holding your curling iron and that the clamp is facing you. If the clamp is facing you then your curls will end up outwards. If the clamp isn’t facing you then your curls will be inward. Watch how to curling iron faces in the video if you’re having a little trouble understanding.

I begin picking out strands of hair that are clumped together. I like it when my curls are ‘piece-y’. To get them into separate strands I lightly coat them with pomade. I use Got2b defiant pomade [Pictured below].

I use Granier Fructis Sleek & Shine Anti-Frizz Serum for shine, softness, and more frizz control. It’s basically oil so you don’t want to put a lot of it into your hair. There’s a picture of the product in my ‘Daily Hair Routine’ blog as well as my ‘How to Straighten Hair – The Proper Way’ blog.
If you prefer to use hairspray then I recommend you use a hairspray that says Flexible Hold. It’ll keep your hair in place, but will leave just enough natural movement in your hair.
